Fire

In an Emergency Phone 000 and give the location of the fire.

Fire control in the Kuranda area is shared between the Kuranda Urban Brigade which serves a limited area in Kuranda township, and a number of volunteer rural fire brigades. Check to find which area you are in, and consider joining your local brigade as a volunteer.

Permits

A permit is required to burn off any material which is of greater size than 2 metres in any direction. This permit is to be obtained from the area fire warden.

Fire Breaks

Since conditions and habitat types vary throughout the Kuranda, Myola and Speewah areas, so does the most appropriate type of fire break you should maintain to protect your property.

In the dry areas, such as Koah, Oak Forest and parts of Speewah, a strip at least 3 metres wide needs to be kept clear of all flammable materials. This can incorporate driveways and lawns, and may be around individual buildings or a larger area. Always keep flammable materials away from buildings.

In the rainforest, since established rainforest does not burn, a strip of rainforest at least 15 metres wide will create an effective fire break. This should be of non-flammable species and without grass under the forest canopy. Do not clear rainforest from boundaries as this will create a fire hazard, for grass and weeds take over and will burn in a dry period.

Help with rainforest plantings can be obtained from Kuranda Envirocare (Ph 4093 8834). All other information on fire issues can be obtained from the fire wardens/brigades listed above. A number of pamphlets are produced by the Rural Fire service, including one on “Bushfire Safety in Urban Fringe Areas“ which contains much useful information.

At times of high fire danger a total fire ban may be proclaimed. No fires should be lit outdoors at these times.
